DAILY READINGS: Joshua 16-17; Isaiah 11-12; 1 Thess. 2:13 to 3:13

And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. Acts 10:13-14

On the rooftop of Simon’s house in Joppa, the apostle Peter was torn between honouring Jewish convention and his desire to honour the Lord. This problem pushed him into a corner and he exclaimed, “Not so, Lord”. He was trying, impossibly, to serve two masters. If one calls Jesus Lord, then he cannot at the same time say, “Not so” to the Lord’s commands. It has been said that if He is Lord at all, then He must be Lord of all. —Roy Hill

Lord, speak to me that I may speak in living echoes of thy tone;
As Thou hast sought, so let me seek, Thine erring children lost and lone.—Frances R. Havergal
